dying remora – PRP Mixtape 5, June 2023

the wand of time reigns

Songs from the experience of my June 2023.

I started this early in the month and then abandoned it, but I had previously determined that these should be 23 songs each, so I had to try to finish it if I wanted to put it up for June. Next month I might be in a different mood, and I didn’t want to be confined to what I had started earlier in the month.

Hotlanta Half 2023

The Hotlanta Half this year went better than expected. It was still nowhere near my personal best, but that sort of thing may not be possible since we all get a little slower with age no matter how much we train to fight it. I didn’t really have a time goal at all going into the race, because I know better these days and prefer not to set myself up for disappointment. It’s hard to not compare myself to my younger self. I’ve learned that the best thing to do is just go into each race fresh and run just that race, with no notion of the past and no expectation. I know how to race and I don’t need ghosts following me on the course.

Anyway, someone of course asked me before the race what I was hoping for in terms of performance. It was someone I’ve known for a long time, so the time they mentioned was far from attainable for me these days. I shrugged it off and said, yeah, there is no way that is possible. It sure would be nice to get a sub-2 though. When I said that I didn’t believe at all that it was going to happen, but I figured I’d put it out there because it was, after all, a worthy goal.

It was overcast. I dressed well for the race. I hadn’t had a great morning, but I was in a good mood and ready to try to see what I could do. I can’t believe how well it turned out. It’s still a long way to go to beat my personal best, but I was really happy with my performance.

I crushed my sub-2 goal with a 8:58 pace and a time of 1:57:34.

My 26th Half Marathon race is a wrap.
